If you are new in town and looking for ways to fill up your time, or just want to be in step with the locals, here are a few pointers. There are several non-profit organizations which dedicate their time to providing foreign diplomatic families with a friendly introduction to life in the Washington community. These are the “Welcome to Washington” group, Islamic Women’s Association, Asia Society, to name a few. The more popular associations which the Malaysian ladies are encouraged to join are these three:

ASEAN WOMEN’S COUNCIL (AWC)
AWC of Washington D.C. was founded in 2001 with the intent to promote mutual understanding, cooperation and solidarity among ASEAN community. The AWC consists of all the 10 ASEAN nations. The Executive Committee of AWC holds a meeting every month to discuss its activities such as annual charity bazaar, field trips for its members and their families, luncheon with the American congressional women’s group, national costume parade and tea with sponsors of American charities. All PERWAKILAN Washington D.C. members are automatically members of the AWC D.C.

COMMONWEALTH WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION (CWA)
The CWA, which was formed 40 years ago in Washington, is an association of over 40 Commonwealth Ambassadors’ wives and other diplomatic women from Commonwealth countries who seek to serve their homelands and the Washington community, while sharing friendship and cultural interests at the same time. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month except for a brief break in July and August. Talks or cultural performances are usually presented after the meetings. Besides fund-raising activities for charity, CWA also maintains its annual Christmas gift drive to charities such as The Hospital for Sick Children and Home for the Elderly.

THE HOSPITALITY and INFORMATION SERVICE (THIS)
THIS is an organization of volunteers who offer their time and services to diplomats and their families posted in Washington D.C. It was founded in 1961 at the suggestion of the Chief of Protocol in order to help the hundreds of new diplomats who had arrived in Washington. Today over 3000 diplomatic families reside in the Washington area. THIS has, as its Sponsors, the spouses of the members of the President’s Cabinet. The Chief of Protocol, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and the spouse of the Mayor of the District of Columbia serve as the Honorary Sponsors. THIS services include the distribution of free information on many subjects such as schools, food and area attractions. Some of its programs are Home Hospitality, English and Foreign Conversation practice and activities ranging from art tours to children’s gatherings. The area English Conversation groups meet two Wednesdays in a month except for the McLean Conversation group which meets every Wednesdays. These groups meet in the homes of volunteers and diplomats who are members of the group. Some of the groups are:-
- D.C English Conversation
- Bethesda/Chevy Chase English Conversation
- Potomac English Conversation
- Northern Virginia English Conversation
- THIS/American Association of University Women McLean English Conversation
- THIS/AAUW Arlington English Conversation
- Gaithersburg/Rockville Group (new group)
Another organization which conducts similar activities is the Christian Embassy. It is a nonpolitical, nonpartisan organization that acts as a spiritual resource to diplomats and U.S. government and military officials in Washington D.C. Although many of its programs cater to Christians, people from all faiths and backgrounds are welcome to enjoy some of its non-religious programs. Some of the special events that are being offered to women are:-
- Fall, Christmas and Spring events
- Weekly Bible Discussion groups
- Outings and Luncheons
- Events with spouses
One can never run out of people to meet and things to do while one is here. It’s a question of whether one wants to or
not. So there ladies, take your pick and enjoy what DC has to offer. Enjoy………
